Stephanie Mills – Born for This.
The incomparable Grammy Award Winning songstress Stephanie Mills released her first contemporary R&B album, ‘Born For This,’ in over 13 years on 2nd August 2004.
Including the US single ‘Can’t Let Him Go’
Stephanie Mills released the album independently through her newly formed JM label via Expansion in the UK.
Mills is the pre-eminent soul diva of the 70’s and 80’s who scored a record 10 #1 Billboard R&B hits including; ‘Whatcha Gonna Do With
My Loving,’ ‘I Feel Good All Over,’ Two Hearts (with Teddy Pendergrass), ‘Never Knew Love Like This Before’ and ‘Home.’
‘Can’t Let Him Go’ was produced by highly respected, award winning R&B hit maker Barry Eastmond and written by Gordon Chambers who has written hits for Destiny’s Child, SWV and Anita Baker. ‘Born For This’ is comprised of a unique blend of the timeless R&B jams and the soul stirring anthems Mills is known for while fitting comfortably along side today’s urban music. Sway, the popular DJ of Hot 97, New York City’s most popular hip- hop station recently interviewed Mills on the air and described her as a ‘Classic soul artist who in a world of artist who can’t really sing is more relevant than ever.’
In the past 13 years the petite vocal powerhouse has kept busy professionally by returning to her first love– the stage where at 13 she had her major breakthrough starring as Dorothy in the 7 time Tony Award winning Broadway musical ‘The Wiz.’ She has appeared in several national productions of Ragtime, The Paper Mill Theatre’s ‘Children of Eden’ and ‘Your Arms Too Short To Box With God,’ where she starred with Be Be Winans and Teddy Pendergrass.
Mills took the gospel world by storm in 1994 by releasing ‘Personal Inspirations’ and cultivated a second core fan base that continues to revere her today.
She has continued to tour over the years and has always been a huge draw. It was the fervent, numerous fans she met in her travels who encouraged her to record again.
‘In 1990, after I delivered my last record to the company I was with, I was totally disillusioned with the music industry and just wanted a more normal life. Not producing records allowed me to work when I wanted to work and not be constantly on the road to promote the next release.’ The simple life took her and her family which included her then husband and parents to North Carolina. ‘My parents are from the area and being in Charlotte was like coming home. I had spent all of my childhood summers there and returning to North Carolina underscored the sense of family and community I missed.’
After years of touring and the birth of her 2 year old son, Mills decided to go back to the place where it all began–New York City. However, the disdain that caused her to leave recording over a decade earlier had now turned to detraction.
Mills was told that there was no longer an audience for her music and that the radio formats who would play her were fading. Mills knew differently. Buoyed by adoring fans who continually begged for new music and the death of her mother earlier this year, Mills championed on and completed recording the album in August.’All my life I was told that so many of my dreams were impossible.
Through perseverance and sheer force of will I have achieved many things that seemed out of reach. I now know how blessed I am and that I was truly born for this!’
