The first Soul Togetherness compilation in 2000 came at an interesting time for the modern soul scene. While the sound of Philadelphia had been integral to the birth of the term modern soul itself in the 70s, the big records historically had been the anthems from the mighty Philadelphia International under the driving force of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. However on this side of the new millennium there has been a shift of interest to lesser known songs from the period that were overshadowed at the time. These were records not on PIR, but on other labels keen to find their artists some of the Philly magic during the heyday years of 1972 through to about 1978. Many of the records were the real thing utilising exactly the same musicians as Gamble & Huff, others were imitations, but all had the spirit of the Philadelphia sound at this unique point in time.

Naturally many of these records have been known to DJs and collectors from the start, but steadily more of these records are coming to the fore more prolifically at today’s modern soul events. One of my own revivals was The Manhattans’ ‘I Don’t Want To Pay The Price Of Losing You’, a superb Bobby Martin arranged gem from 1974 featuring Vince Montana, Norman Harris and the Don Renaldo strings. It’s featured on ‘Soul Togetherness 2000′. Meanwhile Ian Levine began playing Dianne Steinberg’s ‘One More Time’ in his modern sets at ‘The Rocket’, Richard Searling had fallen in love with The Whispers ‘Will You Be Mine’, Terry Jones was playing Vivian Reed’s ‘Save Your Love For Me’ and the whole scene had woken up to Bettye Swann’s ‘Kiss My Love Goodbye’.

This is what has inspired an idea for this compilation, and so the concept for this album is a collection of songs relevant to today’s modern soul scene that either come directly from Philadelphia or reflect the spirit of the sound during its heyday. It also tries to offer songs not already available on other compilations, which is why it omits the likes of Vivian Reed and Bettye Swann (Don’t miss Kent’s excellent ‘So Soulful 70s’), and showcases the sound of Philadelphia beyond the walls of Philadelphia International Records.
