BBR once again dips into the magnificent catalog of 20th Century Records to bring you this reissue of the highly collectible Soul cult classic by SMOKED SUGAR, on their self-titled debut album.
Released in 1975, SMOKED SUGAR features the production guidance of Hadley Murrell who became well known for his production and promotion of local acts within the Phoenix Soul scene of the 60s (The Servicemen and Freddie, Henchi & The Soulsetters) as well as drawing upon the technical expertise of world renowned engineer Angel Balestier, (Solomon Burke, David Ruffin, Caston & Majors, Eddie Kendricks etc).
This album is a Soul aficionado’s favourite with copies changing hands for large amounts. Notable tracks include the albums only commercial single release, KEEPING UP MY FRONT (BUMPITY BUMP), which was featured in Billboard magazines Top Single Picks in September of 1974 and was later sampled by The Alchemist on his 2009 track Smile. The mid-tempo Funk jam, BUMP ME was also sampled by Gangstarr on the opening track for their 2003 top 10 Hip Hop album, The Ownerz, while I CAN’T GET ENOUGH was reportedly recorded by Michael Jackson originally but never released.
