Mighty Fire - No Time For Masquerading/Mighty Fire.
The story of Mighty Fire, culminating in two albums issued here for the first time on CD, goes back to the early 70s. It begins with a talented and promising young guitarist Mel Bolton signing to Motown as a songwriter and producer. He was put to work with Marilyn McLeod who had just moved from Detroit to be with the label’s new operation in Los Angeles. Meanwhile trumpeter Harry Kim joined Stevie Wonder’s Wonder Love band and played with all the biggest acts, including the Motown 25 show during which Michael Jackson first gave us his moonwalk. Mel created an original line up of Mighty Fire with Harry and another eight members and in 1979 then five members of the group took a call from Carnell “Flakes” Matthews to be the group Flakes and in 1980 they had a hit dance single with “Sugar Frosted Lover”. Still Mel Bolton had ambitions for Mighty Fire, so took the reduced size five-piece ensemble to Elektra Records. The band were totally self contained as writers, musicians and producers. “No Time For Masquerading” was released, in 1981, then “Mighty Fire” in 1982. They were among the last of the organic sounding live soul groups, yet thirty years later there is still a taste for this glorious music, and Expansion are thrilled to be delivering this CD from the original master tapes.
