Nine years after Vollume 1 and five years after Volume 2 we Expansion Records is back with “The Spirit of Philadelphia” – Volume 3 in this, the 40th Anniversary year of Philadelphia International Records. As with recordingson previous releases, this series does not derive itself from the PIR label itself, but all the other artists and labels who took the spirit of what writers/producers Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff were doing to make their own music during the period, often using the same musicians.
While all tracks come from the heyday of Philly on the 70s, most have only come to the fore in the last few years at regular weekenders, all-nighters and club nights. These are modern soul events that also play the style of music also found on our Soul Togetherness range. Most tracks here have never before been issued on CD before and are rare or impossible to find any more in their original vinyl format.
Album opens with Tapestry (lead singer is James Carmichael who became integral to Instant Funk), artists like Barbara Mason, Little Anthony and Major Harris are soul legends while Sister Sledge have had huge pop hits and this first legal issue of Sharon McMahan on CD from the original studio tapes is a song you’ll need to spend hundreds of pounds on to own the original Columbia 7” single.
