Los Angeles-born Donna Washington began her musical
career in the world of gospel, making her debut at her
father’s church at the tender age of three! She
subsequently travelled with her father and sister singing at
various churches throughout the US during her teen years.
After performing at a benefit in Los Angeles, Donna was
spotted by executives from Capitol Records and recorded
her first album (“For The Sake Of Love”) for the label in
1979, receiving critical acclaim. It was her second Capitol
set, 1981’s GOING FOR THE GLOW that gained attention
for the soulful vocalist.
Produced by Chuck Jackson (of the production team of
Jackson & Yancy, responsible for Natalie Cole’s many
hits), GOING FOR THE GLOW featured several stellar
compositions like the US Top 30 R&B hit, the funky,
dance-flavoured ‘Scuse Me, While I Fall In Love,’ written
by a then-emerging solo star Luther Vandross and longtime
friend, singer/songwriter David Lasley; and two
compositions – the infectious title track and ‘It’s
Something’(later recorded by Lalah Hathaway) from stellar
tunesmith and artist in her own right, Brenda Russell. Top
L.A. players on the sessions included Patrice Rushen,
Nathan East, Paul Jackson Jr. and Ndugu Chancler.
Making its’ worldwide CD debut on SoulMusic Records as a
result of demand from soul and dance fans, this expanded
edition of GOING FOR THE GLOW features one bonus track
and notes by renowned UK writer Charles Waring including
a new interview with Donna specifically for this reissue.
